2002:

Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum and Slash performed together at the Randy Castillo Tribute show in Los Angeles on April 29th 2002. They were joined by Buckcherry's Josh Todd and Keith Nelson. Those two left the band (Josh was fired in July 2002).

In August, Duff told Classic Rock magazine that "The Project" was their main priority.

In September they put an ad in various magazines looking for a singer. It said: "Unnamed artist looking for singer-songwriter somewhere in the realm of early Alice Cooper/Steve Tyler, the harder-edged side of McCartney and Lennon."

During the same month, Slash gave Scott Weiland a tape of material they'd been working on. Nothing happened because Scott was still in Stone Temple Pilots.

Dave Kushner, who played with Duff in Loaded, was confirmed as guitarist in October. Also during October, it was confirmed that Izzy Stradlin had been writing songs with the band. He contributed about 10 songs. Kelly Shaefer (ex Neurotica) auditioned in October.

Travis Meeks, as well as some more unknown singers, tried out for the band in December.

2003:

Mike Patton was invited for an audition by Slash in January, but he declined the offer.

The band continued auditioning singers and in April 2003 Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) was mentioned as one of the candidates.

The band's name (Reloaded) and final lineup was revealed on May 13th 2003 in a Rolling Stone article.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office filed charges against Scott Weiland on May 21st, two days after the singer was arrested on suspicion of drug possession.

Weiland entered rehab in early June.

On June 6th, the band's name is reported to be Velvet Revolver.

The band played its first show on June 19th at Los Angeles' El Rey Theatre. The setlist: Bodies, Set Me Free, Sex Type Thing, It's So Easy, Slither, Negative Creep

In August the band cancels the DVD/EP they had planned to release in October.

A Pasadena Court Judge sentenced Scott Weiland to three years probation on August 14. The Judge also enforced counseling sessions and a continuation of his rehab sessions.

The band signs with RCA Records during August. "We're thrilled to partner with RCA Records and its legendary chief, the enigmatic Clive Davis," the band said in a statement. "We believe this marriage will be a loyal, dedicated and fruitful relationship not based solely on business, but instead on the thing that once dared us all to dream — music."

In early October, the band had finished basic tracks for 14 songs with producer Josh Abraham and engineer Ryan Williams.

On October 27th, Weiland was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and misdemeanor hit-and-run following a traffic collision that occurred in Hollywood. He was then ordered to report to a live-in detox program followed by six months in a residential drug rehab center.

2004:

In April 2004 Weiland was cleared to tour with the band and shortly afterwards, the band announced a North American tour to take place during May and June.
The North American leg of the tour started on May 13th in St. Louis, MO. Later in the year the band plays shows in Europe before returning to North America.

2005:

January is spent in the UK and Ireland. The band plays five dates in London.

After the January shows the band plays shows in Japan, New Zealand and Australia before starting yet another North American tour in March.

After completing the North American tour in May, the band's European summer tour start in Germany on June 3rd.

During August Matt injures his hand and can't take part in the August/September leg of the tour which includes dates on the Ozzfest tour. He's replaced by Brian Tichy and Mark Schulman.
