Current Release: ‘Money’ from ‘The Italian Job OST’ (2003)

YOU don’t expect names like Slash, Matt Sorum, Duff McKagan and Weiland to make any kind of move in the music industry without creating some kind of hullabaloo do you? Such was the case with the formation of Velvet Revolver. All manner of rumours hit the fan when word filtered out that the ex-Gunners were thinking of hooking back up again, possibly as a straight-edge challenge to Axl’s floundering fortunes in Guns’N’Roses, and things weren’t helped when it was announced that the frontman for the project would be Stone Temple Pilots singer Weiland who was promptly busted for drugs. Again.

Now the Velvet ship has been steadied, things have moved on apace. And Velvet Revolver have began creating a buzz with a flurry of musical activity. A celebrity attended debut gig at LA’s El Rey Theater saw a set that featured Nirvana and Sex Pistol’s covers as well as G’N’R and Stone Temple Pilots material, and the band have already given a taster of things to come with ‘Set Me Free’ on the soundtrack to The Hulk and a cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Money’ on the Italian Job soundtrack.

A supergroup bar none with a thumping classic rock sound, laced with dashes of punk integrity and colourful glam for good measure. “I was very surprised,” says Weiland at his involvement in the band – which originally arose from his wife’s friendship with bassist Sorum’s spouse. Velvet Revolver have inked a deal with RCA/BMG and have already begun work on their debut album. Unlike Axl’s ‘The Chinese Democracy’, expect to hear from Velvet Revolver in the very near future.

For fans of: Guns N’ Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Sex Pistols

Though Scott Weiland was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, his arraignment on a DUI charge has been delayed once again. The former Stone Temple Pilots frontman/current Velvet Revolver singer is now due back in court on December 23 to enter a plea to the charge of driving under the influence of drugs, which stems from a late October arrest. In the meantime, he continues his lockdown rehab program in Pasadena, California.
