January, 1988 - The band entered Rumbo Studios with producer Mike Clink to record a couple of acoustic songs ("Patience", "Used To Love Her", "One In A Million", "Cornchucker" and a reworking of "You're Crazy"). These songs were intended to be used as B-sides or possibly an EP.
January 2nd, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction begins its chart year at #52 on the Billboard 200.
January 5th, 1988 - Guns N' Roses with Fred Coury on drums plays at KNAC's second anniversary party at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, CA.
January 9th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction drops two places to #54.
January 10th, 1988 - Surprise show at the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, CA.
January 14th, 1988 - The Drunk Fux plays a show at the Coconut Teaszer in Hollywood, CA. Axl sings three songs with the band, one of them being "Yesterdays". He also mentions going into the studio the following week.
January 16th, 1988 - At #49, Appetite For Destruction has cracked the top 50 for the first time on the Billboard 200.
January 21st, 1988 - GN'R plays a show at the Cathouse in Los Angeles, CA. Vince Neil joins the band for the last song, Whole Lotta Rosie. This is Steven's first show since breaking his arm in December 1987.
January 23rd, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction climbs to #43.
January 30th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction gains six places and cracks the top 40. At #37 on the Billboard 200.
January 31st, 1988 - First headlining tour of the USA starts with a show at the The Limelight in New York, NY. The show featured an acoustic set followed by an electric set.

Originally GN'R was supposed to tour in Europe opening for Motley Crue during January, but the tour was canceled.

It was reported that during this tour, Axl walked out of the band, but three days later he was back. The tour ends in February.

February 2nd, 1988 - GN'R plays at The Ritz in New York, NY. MTV is there filming, and an edited version of the show is later broadcast on the channel.
February 4th, 1988 - Show at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, CA.
February 5th, 1988 - Show in San Francisco, CA at the The Warfield.
February 6th, 1988 - Show at the Old Towne Saloon in Fresno, CA.
February 6th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction is now at #35.
February 8th, 1988 - GN'R has a show at the San Diego State University's Montezuma Hall in San Diego, CA.
February 10th, 1988 - Show in Anaheim, CA at the Celebrity Theatre.
February 12th, 1988 - GN'R plays at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, AZ.
February 13th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction is at #30 on the Billboard 200.
February 17th, 1988 - Guns N' Roses receives their first Gold certification. Appetite For Destruction is certified Gold by the RIAA in the USA.
February 20th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction climbs to #27 on the Billboard 200.
February 26th, 1988 - Axl, Izzy and Slash make a guest appearance at Alice Cooper's show at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, CA. They perform on Under My Wheels.
February 27th, 1988 - For the first time, Appetite For Destruction is in the top 25 on the Billboard 200. On this week's chart, the album is at #24.
March 5th, 1988 - On the first Billboard 200 of March, Appetite For Destruction has climbed to #21.
March 12th, 1988 - Guns N' Roses' Appetite For Destruction enters the top 20 of the Billboard 200. It climbs up to #20.
March 19th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction climbs up to #17 on the Billboard 200.
March 26th, 1988 - #15, that's the chart position for Appetite For Destruction on this week's Billboard 200 chart.
March 31st, 1988 - GN'R performs You're Crazy and Used To Love Her on The Late Show.
April 2nd, 1988 - On the Billboard 200 chart, Appetite For Destruction climbs one position to #14.
April 9th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction is getting close to the top 10 on the Billboard 200. It's at #12.
April 11th, 1988 - The band shoots the video for "Sweet Child O' Mine" at Ballroom, Huntington Park, CA.
April 16th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction stays at #12 on the Billboard 200 chart.
April 19th, 1988 - RIAA certifies that Guns N' Roses' Appetite For Destruction has now officially become a Platinum selling album in the USA.
April 23rd, 1988 - "Appetite For Destruction" enters the Billboard Top 10. It's up to #9 from last week's #12.
April 26th, 1988 - GN'R starts another leg of their tour. First show is at the Burlington Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, IA. U.D.O and Zodiac Mindwarp are opening the shows.
April 28th, 1988 - The tour hits Oshkosh, WI for a show at the Oshkosh Convention Center.
April 29th, 1988 - Show at the Coronado Theatre in Rockford, IL.
April 30th, 1988 - Show at the Danville Civic Center in Danville, IL.
April 30th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction stays at #9 on the Billboard 200.

May 1st, 1988 - The Appetite For Destruction tour continues with a show at the Toledo Sports Arena in Toledo, OH.

May 11th, 1988 - GN'R plays a show in Boston, MA at the Orpheum Theatre. This is the last show on this headlining leg before the band starts their tour with Iron Maiden in Moncton, Canada two days later.
May 13th, 1988 - The first show on the Iron Maiden tour where GN'R are the opening act is in Moncton, NB in Canada at the Coliseum.
May 14th, 1988 - Show opening for Iron Maiden at the Metro Centre in Halifax, NS.
May 14th, 1988 - After weeks at #9, "Appetite For Destruction" is now at #7 on the Billboard 200.

May 23rd, 1988 - GN'R are opening for Iron Maiden in Winnipeg, MB at the Winnipeg Arena.
May 25th, 1988 - Show opening for Iron Maiden at the Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton, AB.
May 27th, 1988 - Opening for Iron Maiden in Canada at the Saddledome in Calgary, AB.

June, 1988 - According to Slash, the band had already written lots of new songs. Two of them were "Perfect Crime" and "You Could Be Mine" The band planned to go into the studio in October, November and have a new album out sometime in mid-1989.
June 1st, 1988 - Iron Maiden headlines a show at the Seattle Center Coliseum in Seattle, WA with GN'R as the opening act.
June 3rd, 1988 - US release of the Sweet Child O' Mine single. This became the band's first #1 single.
June 3rd, 1988 - GN'R are in Salt Lake City, UT at the Salt Palace opening for Iron Maiden.
June 4th, 1988 - Down two places to #10 for Appetite For Destruction on the Billboard 200.
June 5th, 1988 - Show as opening act on Iron Maiden's Seventh Tour of a Seventh Tour at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA.
June 6th, 1988 - Another Californian show as the opening act on Iron Maiden's tour. Today's show is in Sacramento at the California Exposition Center.
June 8th, 1988 - GN'R were supposed to open for Iron Maiden at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Irvine, CA, but canceled when Axl lost his voice. Izzy and Slash joined L.A. Guns, who replaced GN'R as the opening act, on stage.
June 9th, 1988 - GN'R canceled this show at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Irvine, CA where they were scheduled to open for Iron Maiden. The rest of the Iron Maiden tour was also canceled due to Axl's throat problems.

The rest of the band played two songs at this show.

June 11th, 1988 - GN'R's debut album stays at #10 on the Billboard 200 chart.
June 18th, 1988 - Up one for Appetite For Destruction. #9 on the Billboard 200 chart this week.
June 25th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction climbs up to its highest position yet on the Billboard 200. It's at #7. The band's new single, Sweet Child O' Mine enters the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #76.
July, 1988 - GN'R opens most of the shows on Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation tour in the USA from July to September.

Tim Collins (Aerosmith's manager at the time): "By the end of the tour, Guns N' Roses were huge.They basically just exploded. We were all pissed that Rolling Stone showed up to do a story on Aerosmith, but Guns N' Roses ended up on the cover of the magazine. Suddenly, the opening act was bigger than we were.

But we felt sorry for them. One, they were so fucked up it was ridiculous. Two, their stupid manager had negotiated a bad deal for them and never bothered to renegotiate it or even complain. Three, they were traveling like Gypsies, their old suitcases held together by twine and gaffers tape. At the end of the tour, we bought them all new Halliburton cases, which their manager took as an insult."

July 2nd, 1988 - Down one to #8 for Appetite For Destruction. Meanwhile Sweet Child O' Mine is climbing on the singles chart, at #63 this week.
July 9th, 1988 - First of two shows at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, AZ, before the tour with Aerosmith.
July 9th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction gains one position on the Billboard 200, at #7 this week. At #56 on the Billboard Hot 100, Sweet Child O' Mine has gained seven places.
July 10th, 1988 - Second show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenixn AZ.
July 12th, 1988 - GN'R's Appetite For Destruction is now a multi-platinum album. RIAA certifies the album at 2x Multi-Platinum in the USA.
July 16th, 1988 - "Appetite For Destruction" enters the top 5 of the Billboard 200. Sweet Child O' Mine is now in the top 50, at #46 on the singles chart.
July 17th, 1988 - Guns N' Roses first show opening for Aerosmith in the summer of 1988. The first show is at the Poplar Creek Music Theater in Hoffman Estates, IL.
July 19th, 1988 - Show opening for Aerosmith at the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, OH.
July 20th, 1988 - Show with Aerosmith in Wheeling, WV at the Wheeling Civic Center.
July 22nd, 1988 - The Aerosmith tour hits the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, MO.
July 23rd, 1988 - "Appetite For Destruction" is now at #4 on the Billboard 200. The Sweet Child O' Mine single is moving up, at #34, up 12 places on the Billboard Hot 100.
July 24th, 1988 - Show opening for Aerosmith in Dallas, TX at the Starplex Amphitheatre.
July 26th, 1988 - Opening for Aerosmith at the Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS.
July 27th, 1988 - Show with Aerosmith at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, IA.
July 29th, 1988 - Aerosmith with GN'R opening has a show at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI.
July 30th, 1988 - GN'R's "Appetite For Destruction" moves up to #2 on the Billboard 200.

Theit single Sweet Child O' Mine is at #25.

July 30th, 1988 - The Aerosmith and GN'R tour visits Mears, MI for a show at the Val-Du Lakes Amphitheatre.
August 1st, 1988 - Show opening for Aerosmith at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, OH.
August 2nd, 1988 - Show in Indianapolis, IN at the Market Square Arena with headliners Aerosmith.
August 4th, 1988 - Show opening for Aerosmith in Philadelphia, PA. Axl tells the crowd about an altercation with the parking lot security and police just before the show. Later on he thanks the crowd for making their record #1.
August 5th, 1988 - Show opening for Aerosmith at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA.
August 6th, 1988 - "Appetite For Destruction" reaches #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart for the first time.

The band's current single, Sweet Child O' Mine has climbed to #18 on the singles chart.

August 6th, 1988 - The Aerosmith tour visits the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY.
August 7th, 1988 - Opening for Aerosmith at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Middletown, NY.
August 9th, 1988 - Opening for Aerosmith at the Cayuga County Fairgrounds in Weedsport, NY.
August 11th, 1988 - Show day in Clarkston, MI. GN'R is opening for Aerosmith at the Pine Knob Music Theatre.
August 12th, 1988 - Second show at the Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI.

August 15th, 1988 - Part of the footage for the "Paradise City" video is shot on this day.
August 16th, 1988 - Footage for the "Paradise City" video is shot at Giants Stadium, New Jersey. It was directed entirely by phone and headset by Nigel Dick.
August 16th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction is certified 3x Multi-Platinum by RIAA in the USA.
August 17th, 1988 - Show with Aerosmith at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD.
August 20th, 1988 - The Monsters Of Rock at Castle Donington, England. The German band Helloween started the festival at one o'clock in the afternoon. An hour later GN'R stepped on-stage. The crowd started to move towards the stage. Despite stopping the show three times during their set two fans fell and were crushed to death.
August 20th, 1988 - Guns N' Roses now has a top 10 single in the US when Sweet Child O' Mine gains four places and is at #9 on this week's Billboard Hot 100.

Appetite For Destruction stays at #3 on the Billboard 200.

August 20th, 1988 - Sweet Child O' Mine is released in the UK with Out Ta Get Me as the B-side. It peaks at #24 on the UK chart. The music video for the song was shot on April 11th, 1988 at the Ballroom, Huntington Park, CA

September 7th, 1988 - The band performs "Welcome To The Jungle" at MTV's Video Music Awards.

"Welcome To The Jungle" wins in the Best New Artist category.


Slash and Steven join Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Billy Idol and Tommy Lee for the taping of Sam Kinison's remake of "Wild Thing". The boys are seen in the video.

September 8th, 1988 - Show with Aerosmith at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, CA.

September 12th, 1988 - The Aerosmith and GN'R tour hits the Compton Terrace in Chandler, AZ.
September 13th, 1988 - According to RIAA, Appetite For Destruction has sold 4x Multi-Platinum.
September 14th, 1988 - Show opening for Aerosmith at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, CA.
September 15th, 1988 - The last show on the Aerosmith tour is at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, CA. Axl and Slash join Aerosmith to perform Mama Kin.
September 17th, 1988 - GN'R plays at the Texas Jam in Irving, TX. The headliner on the bill was INXS.

Before "Welcome To The Jungle" Axl says "Apologize if, I sound like shit but too many planes and too much cocaine, but you know where the fuck you are?....".

After the song, Slash plays a guitar solo which is followed by a blues jam. Axl sings "Bad Time" as an intro to "Sweet Child O' Mine".

September 17th, 1988 - Sweet Child O' Mine is still at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Appetite For Destruction sits at #2 on the Billboard 200.

September 24th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction starts its three week run at the #1 position on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. Sweet Child O' Mine drops down to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
October, 1988 - Welcome To The Jungle is released as a single for the second time in the UK. This time, Nightrain is the B-side. The second issue peaks at #24 on the UK chart.
October 4th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction hits the 5x Multi-Platinum mark in sales.
October 8th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction's last week at #1 on the Billboard 200.
October 15th, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction drops one place to #2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
October 22nd, 1988 - At #58 on the Billboard Hot 100, Guns N' Roses' new single Welcome To The Jungle makes its chart debut this week.
October 23rd, 1988 - The Welcome To The Jungle / Nightrain single enters the UK singles chart at #31.
October 29th, 1988 - On the US charts, the Welcome To The Jungle single is at #44 on the Billboard Hot 100.
November 5th, 1988 - Welcome To The Jungle is at #33 on the Billboard Hot 100.
November 6th, 1988 - The second issue of the Welcome To The Jungle single reaches its peak position on the UK singles chart. It's at #24.
November 12th, 1988 - Welcome To The Jungle is at #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
November 17th, 1988 - GN'R make the cover of Rolling Stone magazine's issue #539. The cover says Guns N' Roses Hard Rock Heroes.
November 19th, 1988 - Welcome To The Jungle climbs up to #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA.
November 26th, 1988 - The band's latest single, Welcome To The Jungle is at #14 in the Billboard Hot 100.
November 30th, 1988 - Geffen Records releases "GN'R Lies". It was originally going to be called "Lies: The Drugs, The Sex, The Violence, The Shocking Truth..", but someone at Geffen noticed that the name was too long. So they changed it to "GN'R Lies". The album includes the four tracks from "Live ?!'@ Like A Suicide" plus four acoustic tracks.

A couple of lines in "One In A Million" draws negative publicity to the band.

When Lies went to number two on the Billboard Chart, the band became the only artist with two albums in the top five at the same time in the 1980s.

According to Duff the acoustic tracks were recorded one night in the studio when they were drunk!

December, 1988 - During December the band played in Japan, New Zealand and Australia.
December 3rd, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction is still in the top three on the Billboard 200.
December 3rd, 1988 - Just outside the top 10, Welcome To The Jungle has advanced to #11 on the US Billboard chart.
December 4th, 1988 - First show in Japan at the NHK Hall in Tokyo.
December 5th, 1988 - Show in Osaka, Japan at the Festival Hall.
December 6th, 1988 - RIAA certifies that Guns N' Roses have sold 6x Multi-Platinum of Appetite For Destrction.
December 7th, 1988 - The band returns to Tokyo for a show at the Nakano Sunplaza.
December 9th, 1988 - Show at the NHK Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
December 10th, 1988 - GN'R plays at the legendary Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. Meanwhile in the USA, the band's latest single is now in the top 10 on the chart. At #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.
December 14th, 1988 - The first Guns N' Roses show in Australia is at the Sports & Entertainment Centre in Melbourne.
December 15th, 1988 - Second night in Melbourne, Australia at the Sports & Entertainment Centre.
December 17th, 1988 - The band is in Sydney, Australia for a show at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Back home, the Welcome To The Jungle single stays at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.
December 19th, 1988 - The last show on the Japan, Australia and New Zealand tour is at the Big Top in Auckland, New Zealand
December 24th, 1988 - Welcome To The Jungle climbs up to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
December 31st, 1988 - Appetite For Destruction ends the year on the Billboard 200 at #4. The album entered the top 200 back on August 29th, 1987 at #182.
